Leading advocacy group, the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue, has called for a fresh focus on Sydney Olympic Park to unlock the precinct’s potential, with more ambitious housing and commercial targets, new and upgraded venues and day-night activations to attract more residents and businesses.

A new report from the Dialogue, Re-lighting the Flame – Building a Bright Future for Sydney Olympic Park, has been released on the 25th anniversary of the Sydney Olympic Games, which highlights how the precinct can become more than just an “events destination.”

Dialogue CEO Adam Leto said there was an urgent need for the government to work with the private sector on a city-shaping agenda to establish a vibrant residential, commercial and entertainment precinct.

“We need to decide whether we’re content with this area just being known as the home of the best Games, or if we actually want the spark of the Olympic flame to ignite Sydney Olympic Park’s potential,” Mr Leto said.

“This place can be more than just a major events destination, and with future transport connections on the way, now is the time to start planning and identify the opportunities that can catalyse the next wave of growth.

“But we can’t afford to wait much longer. Unlike other parts of Western Sydney, growth in Sydney Olympic Park has stalled in recent years, and we need to look at ways we can breathe new life into one of the most strategically located precincts in the country.”

In its submission to the release of the Draft Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2050, the Dialogue said the plan fell short on the number of dwellings it could support, particularly around the future Metro station.

The Dialogue believes that Sydney Olympic Park could house at least 45,000 residents by 2050, featuring a mix of affordable, social and market housing.

“Sydney Olympic Park is capable of being more than an events precinct. We need ambitious housing targets and an innovative commercial strategy that creates a community for future generations, a place where businesses can grow and a precinct that draws global talent alongside world-class sport and entertainment,” Mr Leto said.
