Hospital Masterplan a Shot in the Arm for Bankstown

The new masterplan and additional funding for the redevelopment of Bankstown Hospital is a positive step towards establishing a new nation-leading health and education precinct in Greater Western Sydney (GWS), according to the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue.

The masterplan confirms Bankstown CBD is set to receive a quality health facility with a large emergency department as well as services for maternity, mental health and intensive care.

Today’s announcement was welcomed by the Dialogue with Chairman, Christopher Brown AM, recognising the commitment of Premier Chris Minns, and Health Minister, Ryan Park, for breathing new life into this project.

“The Dialogue secured a public commitment from Liberal Premier, Dominic Perrottet, at its Boomtown Summit in 2022 but stupid opposition from both the Labor and Liberal MPs for Bankstown and East Hills caused major delays which have cost the NSW taxpayers $700 million dollars,” Mr Brown said.

“We thank Health Minister, Ryan Park, and Bankstown MP, Jihad Dib, for keeping their word and delivering this hospital for the people of South West Sydney, despite the cost escalation.

“Premier Minns and Treasurer Daniel Mookhey are also to be congratulated for hanging tough on this deal. Together with Canterbury Bankstown Council they have honoured their promise to the community and the Dialogue.

“We are excited about a new state-of-the-art public hospital in the CBD, near the new metro station and university/TAFE building, bringing smart jobs and modern health care to the booming city of Bankstown.”

With Canterbury-Bankstown’s population set to reach 450,000 by 2041, Dialogue CEO, Adam Leto, said the masterplan paves the way for improved health outcomes and can kickstart major urban renewal in the Canterbury-Bankstown corridor.

“The Dialogue has long advocated for the redevelopment of Bankstown Hospital with the masterplan presenting an opportunity to link the hospital, nearby Western Sydney University campus and adjoining TAFE services within a short distance to the soon-to-be-complete metro station,” Mr Leto said.

“The NSW Government has also made the right decision by announcing Bankstown TAFE will be strengthened by relocating training to the Western Sydney University Bankstown City Campus and Padstow TAFE campus.

“This masterplan lays the groundwork to catalyse industry investment and spark the growth of Bankstown CBD and drive a range of health, social and economic outcomes, just as we’ve seen in other precincts such as Westmead, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Nepean.”
