In recognition of their immense professional contribution to Western Sydney, healthcare leaders Professor Les Bokey AM and Dr Jamal Rifi OAM have been honoured by the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue.
Professor Bokey, an internationally renowned surgeon, was the Foundation Professor of Surgery and Clinical Dean at Western Sydney University and Director of Surgery at Liverpool Hospital, while Dr Rifi, a founding member of Muslim Doctors Against Violence, gained national recognition during the COVID pandemic when he set up a vaccination clinic in the driveway of his South West Sydney home.
Presenting them both with a Patrons Prize at the Dialogue’s 10th anniversary gala dinner attended by the NSW Premier Chris Minns, Dialogue Chairman Christopher Brown AM said the dedicated health professionals had been tireless advocates for the region throughout their distinguished careers.
The work of these incredible healthcare professionals has been honoured around the world, but nowhere has the impact been felt and appreciated more than in the communities of Western Sydney,” Mr Brown said.
“Not only are they globally recognised in their field, but they are also caring, compassionate and courageous leaders in the region. Our award honours their unique contributions to public health and community cohesion in South West Sydney.
“They are remarkable individuals who have achieved much locally and globally. It is also fitting that during a time of national and global disharmony, we have two talented and dedicated professionals from different backgrounds who have worked closely together for many years to achieve great outcomes for us all.”
The Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue’s Patrons’ Prize recognises individuals for their exceptional contributions to Western Sydney, particularly in public administration, collaboration, policy and city-shaping work that enhance Western Sydney’s growth and prosperity.
Also recognised for their contribution to the region and support of the Dialogue were the organisation’s Patrons – Peter Shergold AC, Mike Mrdak AO, Lucy Turnbull AO and Kerry Schott AO, as well as former Patrons Nick Greiner AC and Craig Knowles AM.
“Together, these leaders have wealth of experience, which they have generously shared through their continued commitment to the region,” Mr Brown added.
