The Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue welcomes today’s announcement that the Government will deliver the long-anticipated Metro link to Bankstown.

Dialogue Chairman Christopher Brown AM said the upgrade will improve transport connections for the people of Western Sydney and provide new housing opportunities.

“The commitment to go ahead with the Bankstown to Sydenham metro line as part of Sydney Metro South West keeps the NSW Government on the right track to increase service frequency across the network, giving the people of Western Sydney the public transport they both need and deserve,” Mr Brown said.

“Senior Coalition cabinet figures told me before the last election they were planning to drop the Metro conversion of T3 Bankstown Line, so I want to thank Premier Minns and Transport Minister Haylen for saving this project and delivering for the people of South West Sydney.

“This project will act as a growth catalyst for Bankstown CBD, servicing the new Western Sydney
University campus and potentially a relocated Bankstown Hospital, that Labor should confirm soon.

“It is also now the perfect time for the government to also plan for the future extension of this link with master planning and corridor protection for the Metro’s eventual extension from Bankstown to Liverpool, onto both Western Sydney International Airport and Campbelltown.

“The Sydney Metro City and South West offers the Government much-needed urban renewal opportunities along the rail corridor, providing a boost to housing supply, connection to better services and improved amenity for Greater Western Sydney residents.

“We recognise there will be some disruption for commuters, but the ‘metrofying’ of the old heavy rail line will prove its worth for generations to come.

“This is the price of progress for living in a big city. We believe any disruption is outweighed by the
added capacity to the existing City Circle Line and the increase in amenity it will provide.

“I’m delighted the Premier has committed to completing the Bankstown to Sydenham metro line and look forward to the Government soon confirming it will also go ahead with the Metro West rail connecting Sydney to Parramatta.”
