BOOMTOWN! Project of the year winners 2022
To recognise developments that have delivered excellence in infrastructure and transport, the BOOMTOWN! Project of the Year award was established to acknowledge completed (or near completed) major projects over the previous 12 months that have, or will, significantly contribute to the sustainable growth of Greater Western Sydney.
These are presented at our annual BOOMTOWN! Summits in November.

6 Hassall Street, Parramatta WSU
Engineering & Innovation Hub
6 Hassall Street by Charter Hall and Western Sydney University is a world-leading Innovation Hub. Featuring market-leading sustainability performance, advanced smart building technologies, it delivers a next generation learning and work places. The key benefit for the community is increasing the access to high quality education and research and delivering a facility that is highly engaged and connected to industry and the local communities in Greater Western Sydney.
Outstanding commercial property
32 Smith Street
Owned, developed and operated by The GPT Group, 32 Smith Street is a world leading addition to Parramatta CBD. Unveiled in December 2021, the 29-storey office building is the first site to be developed by GPT in the Parramatta CBD with an end value of more than $320 million. A 21st century building in a world class commercial and cultural hub, 32 Smith has already welcomed QBE Insurance and other businesses into its state-of-the-art office space.
Outstanding health project
Campbelltown Hospital Redevelopment Stage Two
World class healthcare has been delivered to south-western Sydney with stage two of Campbelltown Hospital Redevelopment. The $632 million project ensures more beds, a new maternity unit, additional kids services and new nuclear medicine and dental services are on offer to the community. Campbelltown hospital’s redevelopment makes it a major hub for mentalhealth care in the Macarthur region.
Here Out West
‘Here Out West’ is a poignant drama about family and an authentic portrait of place written by eight talented young writers from western Sydney. Intensely relevant and reflective of our times, ‘ Here Out West’ is a ground-breaking film that reframes the Australian story. Here Out West features nine languages including English, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Kurdish, Tagalog, Turkish, Vietnamese and Spanish, reflecting the individual backgrounds of the writers. The film has been nominated for Best Film at the AACTA Awards and Cinefest Oz Film Prize 2021 Finalist.
Outstanding affordable housing project
SGHC’s $59 million partnership with Lighthouse Infrastructure has delivered 85 high quality apartments with a pool and panoramic views in Deicorp’s ‘Highline’ complex in Westmead. Key and essential workers who meet criteria for low to moderate income bands will be charged 75 % of market rates. The apartments, designed by Turner Studio, are located 500 metres from Westmead Hospital and a short walk from the local Western Sydney University campus.
Outstanding sustainability / environment project
The National Herbarium of NSW
The National Herbarium of New South Wales and its collection of over 1 million plant specimens underpins vital scientific research and is essential for informing decisions about the conservation of our natural environment. Over 100 leading scientists, researchers and staff are now based at the globally significant science hub in Mount Annan.
Outstanding transport project
Northern Road Stage 5 & 6
Stage five and six of the Northern Road by CPB Contractors has delivered a key north-south arterial link between Richmond Road, Bligh Park and Camden Valley Way, Narellan. The $259 million upgrade will improve transport connections between Penrith, the M4 Motorway, Western Sydney Airport and surrounding developments. Sixty-two per cent of the project’s workforce lived locally and 131 females were engaged with 75 in non-traditional trade roles.

PHIVE Parramatta Square
Modelled on French masterpiece, the Pompidou Centre, PHIVE is designed to be a hive of activity in the heart of Greater Western Sydney. An 18-metre opening ensures events are in full view to passers-by, inviting engagement between councillors and the general public. PHIVE is the centrepiece of a $2.7 billion Parramatta Square project which links its rich history with a new era of culture and innovation.
Outstanding adaptive, re-use project
Wester Sydney Startup Hub
Western Sydney Startup Hub’s 1,500 square metres of affordable desk and office space for a community of like-minded entrepreneurs and businesses will create innovative future-focused jobs and cement investment, technology and innovation as a core component of Western Sydney. Located in 19th century sandstone buildings at the Parramatta North Precinct, the Hub is a spectacular example of heritage conservation and adaptive reuse works that will convert the national heritage listed site into a thriving innovation, arts and cultural precinct.
Outstanding sport, recreation and tourism project
WYLDE MTB & BMX Hub
Cecil Park is now home to the largest combined mountain biking and BMX hub in Australia. Wylde in Western Sydney Parklands features more than 15km of purpose-built mountain bike trails, a BMX racetrack and the largest pump track in the Southern Hemisphere. Greater Western Sydney could potentially host national competitions and cement the region as a mecca for people who ride bikes.
