BOOMTOWN! Summit: 8 & 9 November
Greater Western Sydney's Property and Infrastructure Summit BOOMTOWN! 2018 brought "the west to town" and with it, regional influencers across community, business and government to talk all things development, property, finance and infrastructure.
This year we explored the opportunities that catalytic projects like Sydney Metro West and the world's newest Airport at Badgery's Creek could have on urban renewal, liveability and economic development as well as the critical role innovative partnerships play in helping to drive positive social, economic and urban outcomes.
Highlights of the day included:
Hon. Andrew Constance MP opened the summit with an update on Sydney Metro West. The Minister noted that Western Sydney does not stop at Parramatta, and that the 40 year strategy must accommodate for innovative, on demand transport - none of which is possible without tight management of capital budget.
Peter Fitzsimons AM (Sydney Morning Herald) and Clr. Angela Vithoulkas (Independent Councillor, City of Sydney) duked out the politics of infrastructure and the role of media with moderator Larry McGrath (John Holland Group) and co panellists Maryanne Graham (Western Sydney Airport) and Chris Johnson (Urban Taskforce).
John Burton OBE (Former Head of Development UK/Europe and Director Stratford City, Westfield Real Estate) and Dr Tim Williams (Former CEO, Thames Gateway-London Partnership) discussed the key lessons Western Sydney could learn from East London in planning and developing communities north and south of the Thames. Moderator Christopher Brown AM (Chairman, Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue) announced the Dialogue's plan to host a 2019 Study Tour of East London to bring 'home' these lesson learned.
NSW Minister for Western Sydney, Hon. Stuart Ayres MP & Federal Shadow Treasurer, Hon. Chris Bowen MP debated issues of cities, the changing nature of home ownership and the role of migration in a robust discussion moderated by Christopher Dore (Editor-in-Chief, The Australian).
The Dialogue Patrons' Prize for Excellence in Public Policy as well as the BOOMTOWN! Project of the Year were awarded at the inaugural pre-conference dinner. This year's winners were the Hon. Mike Baird and the Western City City Deal (Lindy Deitz, Chief Executive of the City of Campbelltown, Dr Steven Kennedy, Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development & Cities, and Geoff Roberts, Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission).
The evening also showcased Western Sydney's talent with performances from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Bankstown Poetry Slam and included an address by former NSW Premier, the Hon. Mike Baird, who reflected on his achievements in office as Premier and Treasurer and the substantial legacy of his leadership in the state's impressive infrastructure pipeline.
The Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue and its Patrons would like to thank the following event sponsors for making BOOMTOWN! possible. We would especially like to acknowledge the support of the NSW Government and our major event partner, Transport for NSW.
