Road Revamp Keeps Freight Moving in GWS

The Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue today welcomes the joint-funding announcement from the NSW and Federal Governments for a much-needed upgrade to the M5 Motorway.

With a new three-lane toll-free bridge over the Georges River and train lines at Liverpool, this upgrade will deliver improved connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway.

Dialogue Chairman, Christopher Brown AM, congratulated Federal Infrastructure Minister, Catherine King, and said the $380 million dollar investment identifies the importance of the National Intermodal at Moorebank.

“The Intermodal at Moorebank is one of the key international gateways that is driving the growth of Greater Western Sydney that gets forgotten too often,” Mr Brown said.

“I’ve advocated for this upgrade since my time on the board of Moorebank Intermodal which will mean the freight precinct isn’t clogged by trucks while keeping people and freight moving as freely as possible.

“It is fantastic to see Federal Infrastructure Minister, Catherine King and the NSW Government, alongside National Intermodal give our inland port more support to continue to unlock the economic prosperity of the region.”

More than 2,500 trucks a day move from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct onto the Sydney motorway network and is the catalyst for key freight reform in the West.

“It is great to see the northern end of M5 get the funding it needs and we look forward to seeing further investigation of future improvements to the southern end as well,” Mr Brown added.

“With significant residential development on the way and major funding flowing for the M7 project, it’s time to address the southern end of the M5 so the communities of Wollondilly, Camden and Campbelltown can benefit.”
